Broken key extraction in Jasper, AL

A key that snapped in a deadbolt, a car door, or an ignition leaves a fragment you should not dig at with pliers. We extract it, then tell you whether the cylinder can take a new key.

Keys snap when the cylinder is worn, when the blade is thin from years of copies of copies, or when someone turns hard against a bolt that is not lined up. The fragment sits in the plug. The door or the car is now stuck, and the instinct to fish it out usually makes the extract harder. Call Area Locksmith Services at (205) 235-2476 and leave the piece alone.

Where keys break around here

  • House deadbolts and knobs, especially older cylinders that have been copied for every family member
  • Car door locks, when a worn key is used as a lever
  • Ignitions, which are an automotive job and sometimes lead to a switch repair
  • Padlocks and gates, less often, and only when you can show the lock is yours to open

What the visit includes

We extract the fragment without drilling if the plug allows it. Then we look at the pins. A healthy cylinder gets a new key cut from the broken blade, or from the code, and you are done. A scarred cylinder gets a recommendation: rekey if the housing is worth keeping, or a new deadbolt if it is not. You approve that second step before it starts. On a car, extraction plus a fresh transponder key is quoted using the car key pricing, because the chip still has to be programmed.

Put the broken pieces in a pocket, not back into the lock "to see." Bring photo ID. For a car, bring registration, insurance, or the title. For a house, bring something that ties you to the address.

This is same-day work during our open hours, 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM Central, at the standard rate in Jasper, Cordova, Sipsey, Sumiton, Dora, and Empire. If you are also locked out, say that. The extract and the entry are one visit. Details on the entry itself are on the house lockout and car lockout pages.

Questions we answer on the phone

Should I try to pull the broken key out myself?

Leave it. Pliers, glue, and pocket knives push the fragment deeper or scar the pins. A clean extract is faster when the piece is still where it broke.

Can you make a new key from the broken pieces?

Often, if we have all of the blade, including the tip. Keep every piece. If part of the key is missing, we can still originate a key for many cars, and we can rekey or recode a house cylinder.

What if the lock is damaged?

We say so before replacing it. A house cylinder that was already worn is a common reason keys snap. The extract and the new deadbolt or rekey are quoted as separate lines.

Do you extract keys broken off in ignitions?

Yes. Ignition extractions are an automotive visit. If the switch itself is damaged, ignition repair is quoted before any parts are sold. Tell us it is a column, not a door, when you call.

Key snapped off in the lock?

Call (205) 235-2476 and say whether any of the key is still in your hand. Keep the broken piece. It helps us cut the replacement.
